Kurla junction is a major railway station is suburban railway system Located in Mumbai. The station is a very important located on Central and Harbor railway line of Mumbai Suburban railway and also this railway station is of historic importance as the station has seen the evolution of Indian railways transportation system in India. The station is counted among the oldest station of Indian railways established during the time of British rule over India. Kurla station has been part of the originally built 21 miles railway tracks in the great Indian peninsular railway section (established in 1849) connecting Mumbai and Thane. The railway tracks functioned for the first time in 1853 by passenger trains. This passenger train that ran between the Mumbai and Thane was the first passenger train ever ran in India.
Later in 1951, the railway track was undertaken by Central railways of Indian railway transportation system. The station is operated by central railways now. The station serves 2 railway lines of Mumbai suburban railway system. There are total 8 railway platforms and 8 railway track function on this station serving the trains coming by Harbour line and also by the central line of Mumbai suburban railways.
The station code of Kurla railway line differs for both lines of western trains. "C" is a code that is used for those trains which are coming from the central line and "CH" is the station code of Kurla for the trains coming from Harbour line. There are a number of trains and pass through this railway station.
The station is accommodated with all the modern facilities. There are automatic ticket vending machines, PRS windows; waiting halls are available at the station. The lifts, automatic accelerators are also equipped in the station premises. The station building is having all the facilities such as food junctions, coffee stalls, and railway internet connectivity.
About the Kurla
Kurla is a suburban district and also Headquarter of Kurla Taluka of this suburban district of Mumbai. This is a very interesting fact about Kurla that it is named after a species of crab known as "Kurli" that is found anonymously I the village of Kurla. Previously the locality was called "Kurli" only, in later days the place begin to call as "Kurla".
Kurla is located on the southern end of Salsette Island along with the bank of Mithi River. Due to its proximity to the water bodies, the locality emerged as the manufacturer of cotton and weaving production. There were many cotton mills and production farms were established in the city. The half of the population of the area depends upon in the production of the cotton and weaving work in these mills. The locality is a mixed kind of locality where on the one hand there are many big scale business and production farms function on the other hand poor section of society live by earning their livelihood in these productions farms or by doing other works. There are a number of places in and nearby the Kurla where one can visit. There are churches, parks; museum and temples are located in the city which worth a visit.
There is Mahim Fort is located at a very less distance from Kurla where the tourist likes to go and spend some time in its foothills. Apart from this, there is Kurla aquarium is located in the city where a number of Aquarian creatures are kept. There are a number of fishes, crabs, and other water creatures can be spotted.
