Chennai central railway station is the most important railway station of South region. The station is also counted as the most crowded railway station of the south region. The station was formerly known as the Madras central railway station and now officially it is named as Puratchi Thalavair Dr. M.G Ramchandran railway station. The station is the biggest railway hub of the southern region of India s it is connected by Moore Market complex railway station, Chennai central Metro Station, Chennai park railway station and Park town railway station. The Chennai central railway station is located at the distance of 2 kilometers from Chennai Egmore railway station, one of the most important railway stations of Chennai. The station is operated by Southern railway zone and it is administered by Chennai railway division of Indian railways.
The station serves many railway lines and all these railway lines coming to the station of Chennai central railways connect all of the northern regions of India to this station. Chennai – Howrah line connects the city with another metropolitan city of Kolkata via Indian railways. In the same manner, the Chennai-New Delhi railway line connects the city of Chennai to Delhi, the capital city of India. Chennai central also serves the Chennai-Mumbai railway line and connects both of the cities via Indian railway transportation system. The station at Chennai central also serves Chennai –Bangalore line and thus connects all of the Indian regions directly to Chennai and vice-versa.
The station was built in 1900 and as if now there are 17 platforms is built which handles more than 800000 (8 lakh) passengers every day. The station was built in a great architectural model and now it has been declared as World heritage. The station building at Chennai central is built beautifully and it has gone through various developmental phases and renovation.
