The Salem airport is at Kaamalapuram on the Salem-Bangalore Highway, 20 km away. The Airports Authority of India readied it for operation in 1993, but no airline showed any interest in operating flights to Salem. Kingfisher Airlines did operate a service from Chennai but ended its operation in 2012 because of losses. Spice Jet has recently been interested in introducing flights to Salem. However, the city is still waiting for a regular air service.
